Nancy Irene Bailey Barber, Letters Sent, 1839-1869, undated
Scope and Contents
Series 2 has been subdivided into four subseries of Irene’s personal correspondence. Subseries 1-2, Correspondence Received and Correspondence Received, Name Files, have been arranged chronologically. The second subseries is also arranged alphabetically by author’s last name. Subseries 3-4, Correspondence Sent and Correspondence Sent, Name Files, are arranged chronologically. Subseries 4 consists entirely of correspondence sent to Irene by Amzi D. Barber during their courtship and after their marriage. Original order, which held the letters sent by Amzi separate from those sent by Irene, has been maintained. This subseries is missing any correspondence exchanged prior to 1840. However, drafts of earlier correspondence addressed by Irene to Amzi are included in Series 4, Subseries 4, which contains fragmented letters. The letters included in Series 2 provide details of women’s daily lives in the nineteenth century. Irene’s interests, including religion, abolition, and temperance, are explored throughout the correspondence in this series.
