Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

The papers chiefly consist of letters that Margaret Portia Mickey wrote from Peking and other cities in northern China to her parents and/or brother. Also included are letters written by her mother during a visit to China in 1917-1918. These letters discuss surroundings, travel, and sightseeing in detail, as well as the social life and activities of other missionaries. Essays on various subjects and the "missionary station letters" by Portia Mickey cover such subjects as medical work, the flood of 1917-1918 in Tianjin (Tienstsin), women's work, work in rural areas, and schools. A 1943 paper on "The Cowrie Shell Miao of Kweichow" describes the customs she found in a Hai-p'a Miao village. The nineteen letters to W.F. Bohn, written between 1915-1945, report on her activities in China and Japan. Miscellaneous programs and some writings in Chinese also are included.
