Subject Files, 1934 - 2010
Scope and Contents
The files on gifts to the Oberlin College Library from H. H. Kung, bequeathed in 1934, were kept in Special Collections until 2010. These gifts were dynastic histories of China, Chinese history books, and a special wooden cabinet of Chinese workmanship.
Another subject file, kept by the College Archives, concerns the replica of the Golden Pavilion of Jehol at the Century of Progress Exhibition in Chicago in 1933. The financier gifted the deconstructed parts and furnishings of the building to Oberlin College. H. H. Kung provided funds toward its reconstruction, but the fair exhibit was never meant as a permanent structure, and Oberlin could not expend the funds required to make it so. The building is often referred to as the “Chinese Temple.”
Finally, a subject file is dedicated to the Oberlin Alumni luncheon in July 1944, at which Kung was the honored speaker.
