Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

College Green Publishing Ltd. (London, U.K.) creates custom-designed, oversize books for colleges and universities on their history and identity, working in collaboration with archives and other college offices.

From College Green’s website:

In 2009, College Green approached Oberlin College with a conceptual project to create an entirely new memento of college life. Oberlin College is one of America's most prestigious liberal arts colleges with a world-renowned conservatory of music. Oberlin, founded in 1833, was the first college to offer undergraduate education to students of color and female students. Together, we envisioned an intimate and stunning photographic documentary that honors Oberlin's values, people, history and spirit from 1833 to today. A keepsake of substance and depth, designed to move and take the reader on an affirming, emotional journey. It will be a beautifully assembled collector's book that authentically conveys the special spirit and meaning that defines the College and Conservatory's unique identity: Oberlin as cause, college and community. This unique collaboration with Oberlin College has uncovered rare images from the college archives, provided unprecedented access to campus life and unearthed generations of voices, all of which help to capture the essence of a very special place. Oberlin, a book in six parts, tells a human story from the purposefulness and serious conviction of making change in the world to the fun and coming-of-age experiences which every Obie generation shares. A world-class design, documentary and photographic team has painstakingly created the work and it will be printed to the highest standards. The work is intended for those with a love, curiosity, knowledge of and interest in Oberlin. Ten percent of the cover price of each copy sold will be donated to the College Green/Oberlin College & Conservatory Scholarship Fund that is being created to assist Oberlin students. Authentic. Beautiful. Timeless. Oberlin.

College Green’s photographer, Jonathan Glynn-Smith, was in Oberlin a number of times, photographing campus scenes, buildings, events, and people for The Oberlin Book. The greater number of illustrations in the book are scans of original photographs and other items in the College Archives, shared with the publisher. As a courtesy, College Green shared Glynn-Smith’s digital images with the Archives. The Oberlin Book was published in 2012 after several years of engagement in the project.

The collection contains 194 digital photographs. Printed items consist of a few postcards with images from
