Scope and Contents
Subseries 1 is mainly letters, 1920-1949, sent by Alford Carleton to his parents. His mother Mary (“May”) Wilson Carleton is the primary recipient. The letters, many of them numbered sequentially by correspondent Alford, concern his student days at Oberlin College (1920-1924), his missionary work and travels in the Middle East (including Syria and Turkey), his presidency at Aleppo College, Aleppo, Syria, the political and social climate in the Middle East during his time there, and family matters such as the births and upbringing of his daughters Muriel (b. 1930), Anne (b. 1933), and Caroline (b. 1936). This subseries comprises 1.0 linear feet and represents the bulk of the personal correspondence series of Alford Carleton.
