Correspondence, 1940s-1996, undated
Scope and Contents
Although the date span of this series is from the 1940s to 1996, the bulk of the correspondence dates from the late 1970s to 1996. These files are arranged by type of correspondence (e.g. congratulatory letters, invitations, personal, and professional correspondence) and then chronologically. Official correspondence includes both incoming and outgoing correspondence with U. S. Presidents, Ambassadors, and other U.S. government officials, as well as state officials of Illinois. Correspondents include George Bush, Barbara Bush, Ronald Reagan, Richard Nixon, and Illinois Secretary of State Jim Edgar. (Additional letters from Richard Nixon are in the 1972-75 scrapbook in Series XIX.) Personal correspondence consists of primarily incoming letters, many handwritten, that do not concern LaFontant-MANkarious' professional associations. The professional correspondence includes both incoming and outgoing letters concerning her legal work, corporate board memberships, and other associations.
