Scope and Contents
Two copies (carbon and ribbon copies) of Samuel Austin Cravath’s (d. 1917) autobiography written in 1901. The first forty-five pages contain family history, travel to Oberlin from Conneaut, life as a student (AB 1858), and winter term teaching experiences.

Biographical / Historical
Samuel Austin Cravath (1836-1917) was born in Conneaut, Pennsylvania, to James and Emily Davis Cravath on September 27, 1836. James and Emily died while Samuel was a child, and he was raised by his aunt and uncle. He attended Oberlin College, from which he graduated in 1858. As a student, he taught during winter term. Cravath studied medicine, practicing in Springfield, Ohio. He was later editor of the Grinnell Herald in Grinnell, Iowa. Samuel married Mary Raley (1836-1911) in July of 1860, and they had three children: Emily (1863-1863), Rose Mary (1868-1870), and James (1872-1962). The couple also raised their niece, Ella Bonsall (1864-1943). Cravath died in Iowa on March 20, 1917.
