Scope and Contents
Letter from Wiley Finney, wife of A.P. Sigourney, to John Lawton and family on 1842 November 7-8. Finney, an Oberlin Collegiate Institute student, describes her family life, the use of a large tent for church services, and the progress of construction of First Church. She mentions her grandparents (the Finneys) and relates details of interactions between Black and white students on Oberlin's campus. A second letter, written to "Cousin Franklin" on 1842 November 7 describes Finney's journey from Watertown, New York, to Oberlin. It included a stop at Niagara Falls and mentions her "Uncle Charles [Finney]." It has been encapsulated.
