Subseries 1 and 2 are mainly letters (sent and received) between Alford Carleton and professional colleagues concerning his missionary work, the administrative and academic functions of Aleppo College in Syria, and the political and social climate in the Middle and Near East. Correspondents include Alden H. Clack (Trustee of Donations for Education in the Near East), members of the American Legation in Beirut, Lebanon (Lt. Col. Harold D. Hoskins and George Wadsworth), and various administrators of the ABCFM, Boston, Mass.
