Alternatives, 1976 - 1982

Alternatives ranges in date from 1976-1982. It was founded as a forum for progressive campus activism in the late 1970s and early 80s, and published by the Oberlin Political Caucus, a non-profit chartered student organization. The publications are thick, durable magazines. Subjects include the Women's Movement, anti-nuclear campaigns, environmental activism, educational and labor equality, divestment from pro-apartheid corporations, LGBTQ+ rights, and draft deterrence.

Alternatives featured articles on current events, op-eds from the editorial team, and critiques of political philosophy and published works. Though the publication is primarily text-based, it includes photographs to illustrate articles. Although it was an Oberlin College student publication, Alternatives noticeably avoids reflection on Oberlin College events, politics, or actions. However, it offers an in-depth look at Oberlin students' study of and engagement with the aftermath of the Kent State University shootings as a political focus of the late 1970s.
