Below the Belt, ca. 1988-1995
Scope and Contents
Below the Belt dates from ca. 1988-1995. It is a satirical publication laid out as a newsletter. Below the Belt often incorporates facetious academic articles (i.e., featuring articles titled "Popular Misconceptions of the 20th Century"), satirizes the Oberlin College administration's politics ("Covert Operations: College Considers Inviting CIA to Recruit"), and spoofs other Oberlin student publications ("The Cartoon the Review Refused to Print") or contemporary social issues ("I Got a Boycott for You, Baby"). The publication was run by a team of student contributors and editors, though it advertises itself as appearing outside the Oberlin sphere of influence. It features a compilation of articles, visual art (photographs, cartoons, sketches), letters to the editor, prose, poetry, petitions, and faux-advertisements.
