Biographical Sketch

Raymond “Ray” Haskell Lufkin was born on January 29, 1899, in Salem, Massachusetts to Parents: Joseph Garland (1868-1952) and Amanda Davis Manda Low Lufkin (1870-1936). His first published work, a pen and ink sketch, appeared in the Boston Herald. Lufkin attended New School of Design in Boston, Mass. and subsequently became a free-lance illustrator doing commercial work, first in Boston and then in New York starting in 1933. A veteran of World War I, Lufkin designed posters and worked as a camouflage artist for the Navy, and designed Treasury Department war bond posters and military maps during World War II. Lufkin designed the national tuberculosis Christmas Seal in 1947.  He illustrated over fifty books and hundreds of advertisements over the course of his career, and also executed murals on commission for businesses in New York. Lufkin won Newberry Honor awards for his illustrations in Ood-le-uk the Wanderer (1931) and The Story of the Negro (1949). In 1941 he created drawings for the 1942 Oberlin College annual calendar.

Raymond Lufkin was married to Adeline Elizabeth "Addie" Lynch (1900-1978) and they had three children: Elizabeth L (1922-1993), Raymond Haskel Jr (1925-1942), and David Dudley (1928-1989). He died in St. Petersburg, Florida on December 10, 1978.
