Biographical Sketch
The Revised Standard Version Bible Committee, organized in 1929, operated for a short time and then was dormant until 1937. The RSVBC is the Committee of the Division of Education and Ministry (prior to 1972 the Division of Christian Education) of the National Council of Churches of Christ of the U.S.A. which translated the Revised Standard Version (New Testament 1946 and revised 1972, Old Testament 1952, and Apocrypha 1957). Professor Clarence Tucker Craig (1895-1953) of the Graduate School of Theology became a member of the New Testament and Apocrypha Sections in 1938. Professor Herbert Gordon May (1904-1977), a member of the Standard Bible Committee (which became the RSVBC) from 1945 and chairman from 1966 to 1976, was head of the Old Testament section from 1960 until his death in 1977. From the Committee's inception until 1966 the chairman was Luther Allan Weigle (1880-1976) of Yale University Divinity School. The office of the RSVBC remained at New Haven until 1972 when it was moved to Oberlin College (1972-76) and then was transferred to Princeton Divinity School.

Method of Acquisition
The files of the Committee, 1929-75, were microfilmed in 1975 at Oberlin on 22 rolls of microfilm. The records in the Oberlin College Archives consist of the microfilm about which we have brief information concerning roll contents. An index to the microfilm is available in the case file (30/128). Other copies of the film are at Yale University, Princeton Divinity School, and the Library of Congress.
Additional information about the work of the Committee is available.
Note: Entry taken from William E. Bigglestone’s unpublished “[preliminary] Guide to the Oberlin College Archives,” which was prepared as individual entry sheets in a three-ring binder during the early 1980s.
