Biographical Sketch
Albert Howe Lybyer (1876-1949) was a scholar of the history of the Middle East and the Balkans and served as an advisor on American policies in the Middle East.
He was born to Salem Henry (1854-1908) and Jane Estella "Jennie Layman Lybyer (1852-1895). He had three siblings: Estes L (1878-1892), Daniel Henry (1881-1962), and Paul Carroll (1885-1938). In 1901, he married Clara Sidney Andrews (1877-1950) in Brazil, Indiana.
Lybyer taught medieval and modern European history at Oberlin College from 1909 to 1913. From March to September 1919, he served as a technical advisor to the King-Crane Commission (also known as the Interallied Commission on Mandates in Turkey, American Section), led by Oberlin President Henry Churchill King (1858-1934) and Chicago industrialist Charles Richard Crane (1858-1939).
Lybyer also held teaching positions at Robart College (Istanbul, Turkey), 1900-06; Harvard University, 1907-09; and the University of Illinois, 1913-44. For more information, see the finding guide to the Albert H. Lybyer Papers (15/13/22) at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
