Scope and Contents

The Ward E. Bailey Senior Family Collection consists of a collection of teaching objects, photographs, and printed materials relating to and collected during Ward E. Bailey Senior and Bertha Bailey’s time as missionaries in Sichuan Province, China, from 1912-1919. The objects in the collection span the seventeenth through the twentieth centuries.

Biographical Sketch

Ward E. Bailey Senior was born March 18, 1880, in Lena, Illinois, to Newton Francis and Antonette Wilson Bailey. Bailey attended Shurtleff College in Illinois beginning in 1902 and received his BA from Central College in 1909. Ward married Bertha Louise Collins (1884-1982) on August 25, 1909, in Marshall, Iowa. Bailey graduated from Rochester Theological Seminary in 1912 and was ordained to the Baptist ministry. In 1912, Ward and Bertha joined the American Baptist Foreign Mission Society and moved to Yaan, Sichuan Province. They lived and worked as missionaries in Yaan for seven years, for example at the West China Union University. In March 1919, they traveled back to Rochester, New York. Ward and Bertha Bailey had three children, Francis Meade Bailey (1916-1985), Marion L. Bailey (1921-1999), Ward E. Bailey Junior (1925-2014). Ward E. Bailey Senior died on February 16, 1961, in Schenectady, New York.
