Scope and Contents

This small collection of black and white photographs, 65 in number, was taken or collected by Franklin Dale, an Oberlin student in the Class of 1927. They date from his time at Oberlin (roughly 1923 to 1927). Photographic prints are in three formats: 2.5 x 3.5, 2.75 x 4.5, and 2.75 x 5 inches. They can be categorized into four broad subjects: Buildings, Football, People, and Views. The photographs are similar to those found in Oberlin College student photograph albums and scrapbooks from the period.

Biographical Sketch

Franklin Dale (John Franklin) was born in Evanston, Illinois, on December 11, 1903. He attended Oberlin College from 1923 to 1927, earning a baccalaureate degree. Franklin attended Bradley University in the summers of 1929, 1951, and 1954 in the field of education. In 1935 he was awarded a master’s degree in education from Northwestern University. In 1945 Franklin took extension courses at Western Illinois Normal School, also in education. He married Gladys May Clark, who attended Bradley University, on June 3, 1930. They had a son, John Franklin Dale, Jr., in 1932. He retired from teaching in 1968, after 39 years of service in education. Franklin Dale died of emphysema in Pekin, Illinois, on May 30, 1979.
