Scope and Contents

Miscellaneous Business Records has been divided into three record series. It contains records related to Oberlin-area businesses, the Mutual Fire Association of Oberlin, and the Oberlin Board of Commerce.

Scope and Contents The records of the Mutual Improvement Club consist of two yearly programs, printed in 1913 and 1914, which contain lists of officers, members, meeting places, and topics covered during meetings. The club had 23 active members and 5 honorary members in 1913. The club’s official colors were blue and white and it had a club song composed by Mrs. Gertrude Anderson, a club president. The Pittsfield Township Records, which range in date from 1835 through 1965, include information related to the school system and two local churches. Administrative records related to the Soldiers and Sailors Association, marriage licenses, infrastructure repairs, and a tornado are also included.

The Court of Amherst Township Records contain the dockets of Joseph L. Whiton, Homer Tyrell, Alvah Lewis, Edgar H. Hinman, Henry Hirsching, and J.B. Parker. They range in date from 1854 through 1891.

The records of the Oberlin Health Commission date from 1959 to 1976. They include the minutes of three monthly meetings in 1961-1962 and annual reports for the years 1959-1976.  Annual reports for the years 1963 and 1965 are missing. These records trace the activities of the Commission and its various committees during the given calendar year and report on the commission’s financial status.

Scope and Contents The Oberlin Non-Partisan Woman's Christian Temperance Union is documented by administrative records, printed material, and miscellaneous items including newspaper clippings and a letter from Ann Hopkins Olds to the Oberlin Weekly News, 1888 March 8. Scope and Contents Central to the records are nine journals, 1887-1944, which contain minutes of meetings and annual reports. The journal covering the first two years is missing, and thus documentation explaining the precise purpose and scope of the group is lacking. Most of the other records are financial, including ledgers, 1885-1924 (3 vols.), and cashbooks, 1892-1928 (4 vols.), detailing how moneys were received and expended.
