Scope and Contents

The John T. Seyfried Photograph Collection comprises prints, negatives, slides and transparencies produced by Seyfied for Oberlin College as freelance work. They cover college events, people, buildings, performances, and guest visitors to campus in the 1980s through the 2000s. Many of the images were used by the Office of Communications for college publications. The collection is arranged in three series.

Biographical or Historical Information

John T. Seyfried is a professional photographer in Oberlin. He was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1958. He studied photography and vocational machine trades at Cuyahoga Community College.

Seyfried began his photography career in 1985 as the Oberlin College staff photographer until 1987, when his status changed to free-lance photographer for the College. He was also the photographer for the Intermuseum Conservation Association in Cleveland from 1997 to 2018.

From 1991 to 1995, Seyfried was a preparator at the Allen Memorial Art Museum at Oberlin College, and has been the museum’s free-lance photographer since 1987. He was also a preparator for the Wexner Center in Columbus, Ohio from 1999 to 2002.

Seyfried has exhibited at the Cleveland Museum of Art, Cleveland State University Biennial and People’s Art Show, Art Official Columbus, Lucky’s Café and Edison’s Pub in Cleveland, and in Oberlin at Firelands Association for the Visual Arts, Feve Bar, and Black River Café.
