Scope and Contents

This collection primarily consists of institutional files related to Oberlin College's German and Russian language departments from 1913 through 1992. The records include information related to writers in residence, summer sessions, and sessions abroad. The German and Russian Department Records have been arranged in three series: Series I. Departmental Administrative Files, Series II. German Language Instructional Files, and Series III. Russian Language Instructional Files.

Scope and Contents The Dutton Family papers document the lives of three generations of the family.  The papers span the years Helen Axford Wiley (Dutton) and Philip Drew Dutton studied at Oberlin (ca. 1910-17), their years as missionaries in China and the Philippines (1919-52), and the military service of their son Colonel Thomas Chester Dutton (retired 1970). A substantial portion of this documentation is personal correspondence; however, the papers also include unpublished manuscripts, reports, diaries...

Scope and Contents The papers consist mainly of 6 letters by Wright and ten by his secretary, 2 telegrams by Wright, 8 blueprints for the house and 2 blueprints for chairs (see the Architectural Records Collection, RG 53, for the blueprints). Filed with them are copies of published articles that describe Wright's ideas and the building of the house plus its restoration by Miss Ellen Johnson and donation to Oberlin College. Scope and Contents The Helen Bigelow White Papers provides a glimpse into the life of an Oberlin student, graduate, wife and mother, both in writing and in photographs. It includes three of her diaries (Series 1): one from her high school years, another from her time enrolled at Oberlin College, and a third from the year of her first child’s birth in 1927, when she and her husband lived in Cleveland. Scope and Contents The Jeanne Ragner Papers contribute some documentation of student life in a language program house at Oberlin College during the 1940s through the 1960s, particularly in the photographs series.  Most of the photographs are informal snapshots of Ragner, students, and others associated with French House.  There are a few professional college photographs in the series that were likely used in publicity vehicles such as the Alumni Magazine.  At least three of...

The bulk of the material is correspondence (with indexes initially prepared by Ellen Speers), and most of the material documents their Oberlin connection up to 1920. Scope and Contents The Margaret Schauffler papers primarily consist of thirty-six sketches, two essays, four journals, and an oversize scrapbook that document her life as a political activist and prolific artist. This record group, consisting of five series, documents the activities of the Peace Corps Training Program that existed at Oberlin College from 1963-1966. Because the program trained volunteers for the French-speaking Ivory Coast, some of the documents are written in French.

Scope and Contents The papers of Thomas and Katherine Farquhar document the social lives of two Oberlin College students during and after the first World War.
